Exactly 20 years ago, as a concert-band-obsessed middle schooler, I was deeply moved by works published by the venerable American music publisher C.L. Barnhouse. I literally spent every last penny of my limited allowance buying new CDs and full scores, and my greatest joy was listening to the music while poring over those scores.
I was particularly engrossed in the works of James Swearingen, Ed Huckeby, David Shaffer, Robert Sheldon and Steven Reineke. Looking back now, these composers shaped the very foundation of my sense of concert band sound.
Eventually, I developed a strong interest in composition itself and began to dream of becoming a composer. Twenty years have passed since then.
Last year, my concert band piece Thawing, which won the Midwest Clinic Composition Award, was published by Randall Standridge Music. Coincidentally, works by Ed Huckeby and Robert Sheldon—composers whose scores I once studied with such passion—are also published by the same publisher.
To find myself in the position of a fellow composer publishing works with the same publisher is truly astonishing.
I intend to draw strength from this experience and continue moving forward with dedication.
今からちょうど20年前、中学生で吹奏楽大好き小僧だった私は、アメリカの老舗楽譜出版社 C.L.バーンハウス社から出版されている作品に心を動かされていました。
限られたお小遣いを文字通り全額叩いてバーンハウス社の新譜CDやフルスコアを買い集め、フルスコアを眺めながら音楽を聴く時間が何よりの楽しみでした。
特に夢中で聴いていたのは、ジェイムズ・スウェアリンジェン氏を筆頭に、エド・ハックビー氏、デイヴィッド・シェイファー氏、ロバート・シェルドン氏、スティーヴン・ライニキー氏の作品です。
今思うと、私にとって吹奏楽という編成のサウンドの原点を形づくってくれた作曲家の方々ばかりです。
やがて私は作曲そのものに強い興味を抱くようになり、「作曲家になる」という夢を志すようになりました。
あれから20年という歳月が流れました。
昨年、ミッドウェスト・クリニック主催の作曲賞を受賞させていただいた作品「雪解け」は、ランダル・スタンドリッジ・ミュージックから出版されています。
そして偶然にも、かつて憧れ、夢中で楽譜を眺めていたロバート・シェルドン氏やエド・ハックビー氏の作品も、同出版社から出版されています。
事実上、同じ出版社から作品を出版する同僚作曲家という立場になり、
こうした巡り合わせに、非常に驚いております…！
この経験を励みに、これからも精進していきたいと思います。
