【吹奏楽作品「島影を護る翼 (Guardians 【吹奏楽作品「島影を護る翼 (Guardians Above the Archipelago)」初演音源公開🎧️】(English below) 沖縄県の航空自衛隊南西航空音楽隊 @jasdf_swdfband の第40回定期演奏会を記念する委嘱作品として2025年12月に作曲、今年の3月に初演された「島影を護る翼」の初演音源をYouTubeに公開いたしました！ YouTubeリンクはこちら🔗 ⁡https://youtu.be/BFIq41Gc-YM?si=STJVCn9bE1NjIaf_ 演奏してくださった航空自衛隊南西航空音楽隊の皆さん、指揮の大石利勝さん、本当にありがとうございました！ 那覇基地を拠点とする音楽隊からの委嘱であることを踏まえ、南西諸島に見られる独特の音階を音楽の素材として取り入れました。温暖な気候や、おおらかでゆったりとした人々の気質を音楽で表現するとともに、そうした自然や人々の暮らしを空、そして宇宙から護る航空自衛隊の姿を描いた作品です。 是非お聴きいただけたらと思います！ ————— I’m pleased to share the premiere recording of "Guardians Above the Archipelago", a work I composed in December 2025 on commission to commemorate the 40th Annual Concert of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Southwestern Air Defense Force Band in Okinawa, Japan. The work was premiered in March this year! YouTube link here🔗⁡ https://youtu.be/BFIq41Gc-YM?si=STJVCn9bE1NjIaf_ My heartfelt thanks to the JASDF Southwestern Air Defense Force Band and its conductor, Toshikatsu Oishi, for bringing this piece to life! For this commission from the band based at Naha Air Base, I incorporated distinctive scales found in the music of the southwestern islands of Japan. Through the music, I sought to evoke the region’s warm climate and the relaxed, generous spirit of its people, while also portraying the Japan Air Self-Defense Force watching over these natural landscapes and the lives of those who call the islands home, from the skies and beyond. 【Reveries of the Island (吹奏楽 演奏時間1 【Reveries of the Island (吹奏楽 演奏時間14分 委嘱作品初演)】(English is below) 台湾の社会人吹奏楽団「一夫樂集 房角石管樂團」 @iffmusic20180815 の委嘱作品として作曲させていただいた「Reveries of the Island」が、10/31(土)に行われる同団の演奏会にて初演されます！ 台湾の自然や歴史など、様々なことに思いを馳せた14分ほどの作品です。 指揮は林昀宏老師。 作曲当時、思い描いていた初演の姿があります。今となっては叶わなくなってしまったことに寂しさを感じずにはいられませんが、それでもこうして作品が初演の日を迎えられることを、心よりありがたく思っております。 演奏会では、私の「Thawing(雪解け)」も演奏される予定です。 台湾に行くことを今からとても楽しみにしています！🇹🇼 ——————— My new work, commissioned by the Taiwanese amateur wind ensemble "IFF Music Cornerstone Wind Ensemble", will receive its world premiere at the ensemble’s concert on October 31! Approximately 14 minutes in length, the work reflects my thoughts on Taiwan’s nature, history, and many other aspects of its rich cultural landscape. The concert will be conducted by 林昀宏 laoshi. When I composed this work, I had a particular vision of how its premiere would unfold. There is a sense of sadness in knowing that this vision can no longer be realized, but I am sincerely grateful that the work will nevertheless have the opportunity to come to life in performance. 先日は尚美ミュージックカレッジ専門学校にて勤務されている吹奏楽作曲家の方々とお酒をご一緒させていただきました🍺 他愛もないお話から作曲に関するお話まで、とても楽しい時間を過ごすことが出来ました！特に師匠の一人である高橋伸哉先生に本当に久しぶりにお会いすることができて感慨深かったです…！ 左から、芳賀 傑さん、広瀬勇人さん、福島弘和さん、高橋伸哉さん、私。ありがとうございました！ The other day, I had the pleasure of getting together for drinks with several wonderful wind band composers who teach at SHOBI College of Music. 🍺 We had a great time talking about everything from casual, everyday things to music and composition. It was especially meaningful to see Shin’ya Takahashi, one of my mentors, again for the first time in many years. I was truly happy to have the chance to catch up with him! 昨夜は、先週に引き続きシンガポール軍中央軍楽隊と日本の吹奏楽団とのジョイントコンサートへ🇸🇬🇯🇵 今年3月の響宴で「Light in the Dark」を演奏してくださった神奈川大学吹奏楽部 @kusb_yokohama とのジョイントコンサートでした！ 音楽の素晴らしさを心から体感した演奏会で、幸せの連続でした…！「リベルタドーレス」凄まじい！ Last night, I had the pleasure of attending another joint concert between the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band and a Japanese wind orchestra, following last week’s concert! This time, it was a joint concert with the Kanagawa University Symphonic Band, who performed my piece Light in the Dark at the 27th KYO-EN this past March. It was a truly wonderful concert that made me feel, from the bottom of my heart, just how powerful and beautiful music can be. One magical moment after another… I felt incredibly happy to be there! 【黄昏に灯る街明かり (吹奏楽 演奏時間4分) 初演されました！】(English below) 北海道教育大学函館校吹奏楽団 @hue_h_brass 創立50周年記念委嘱作品「Light Pillars」が初演された「創立50周年・記念演奏会」では、現役生のステージのみならず現役生✕OBOG合同ステージも設けられ、演奏会のアンコールのために作曲させていただいた 「黄昏に灯る街明かり(When the Lights Awaken)」 という4分ほどの作品を私自身の指揮で初演させていただきました！ 現役生のための作品の委嘱打診をいただいた際、「演奏会アンコールでも下田さんの作品を取り上げたいです」とのリクエストをいただいたため「既存曲を演奏するのも良いですが、折角なので新たに作曲しましょう！」ということで生まれた作品です。 函館山から見下ろす、夕暮れから夜へ移り変わる函館の美しい夜景が題材となっており、日没直後の「マジックアワー（黄昏時）」に街へぽつぽつと灯りがともり始め、やがて100万ドルの夜景が目の前いっぱいに広がる幻想的な情景を穏やかな音楽で表現しています。 現役生とOBOG、合わせて150名（！）を超える演奏人数で、現役生とOBOGの響きが溶け合った、とても素敵な演奏となりました。 こちらの初演映像も後日YouTubeに公開予定で、追ってアナウンスさせていただきます！ お世話になりました皆様、ありがとうございました！ At the Hokkaido University of Education Hakodate Campus Wind Orchestra’s 50th Anniversary Concert—where my commissioned work Light Pillars received its world premiere—there was also a special combined stage featuring both current members and alumni. On that stage, I had the joy of conducting the world premiere of my new encore piece, When the Lights Awaken (4 minutes). When I was first invited to write a piece for the current members, I was also asked if one of my works could be featured as the concert encore. Instead of choosing an existing piece, I decided it would be a wonderful opportunity to create a brand-new work. The piece is inspired by the breathtaking view from Mount Hakodate as the city transitions from dusk into night. During the magic hour just after sunset, lights gradually begin to appear across the city, until Hakodate’s famous million-dollar night view unfolds before your eyes. I wanted to capture that peaceful and magical moment in music. With more than 150 performers—current members and alumni together—the sounds of both generations blended beautifully into a truly unforgettable performance. The premiere video will also be released on YouTube soon, and I’ll share another announcement when it’s available! 【Light Pillars (吹奏楽 演奏時間19分) 初 【Light Pillars (吹奏楽 演奏時間19分) 初演されました！】(English below) 8/9(日)は函館サーモン・まるなまホール（函館市民会館）大ホールにて「北海道教育大学函館校吹奏楽団 @hue_h_brass 創立50周年・記念演奏会｣に伺いました！ 同団創立50周年を記念する委嘱作品 「Light Pillars」(演奏時間19分) の全曲版も初演され、若々しさ溢れるエネルギッシュで大変熱い演奏を聴かせていただきました。 吹奏楽団の皆さん、そして委嘱の機会を作ってくださいました同団音楽監督・常任指揮者の三笠裕也さん、本当にありがとうございました！ 「Light Pillars」は今から20年前に地元の岩手県で見た「漁火光柱」が作曲の原点となっており、多彩な打楽器と管楽器で私自身の描きたい音世界を思う存分書かせていただきました。 （漁火光柱とは、夜間に海上の漁船が魚を集めるために灯す漁火（集魚灯）が、大気中に漂う微細な氷の結晶（氷晶）によって反射され、光の柱が天へ向かって伸びているように見える自然現象です） 初演映像は後日YouTubeに公開予定で、追ってアナウンスさせていただきます！（公開予定の作品がたくさん🥹随時公開します） お世話になりました皆様、本当にありがとうございました！ On Sunday, August 9, I had the pleasure of attending the Hokkaido University of Education Hakodate Campus Wind Orchestra’s 50th Anniversary Concert at the Hakodate Civic Hall Main Hall! The complete version of my commissioned work, Light Pillars (19 minutes), written to commemorate the wind orchestra’s 50th anniversary, was also premiered. They gave an incredibly energetic and passionate performance full of youthful spirit! My heartfelt thanks to all the members of the wind orchestra, and especially to Yuya Mikasa, the wind orchestra’s Music Director and Principal Conductor, for making this commission possible. Light Pillars was inspired by an unforgettable sight I witnessed in my hometown of Iwate about 20 years ago: “fishing light pillars,” a natural phenomenon in which lights from fishing boats are reflected by tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, creating the illusion of pillars of light stretching upward into the night sky. This experience became the starting point for the piece, and I was able to fully explore the sound world I envisioned through a wide variety of percussion and wind instruments. A video of the premiere will be uploaded to YouTube at a later date, and I’ll share the link when it’s available!
