那覇基地を拠点とする音楽隊からの委嘱であることを踏まえ、南西諸島に見られる独特の音階を音楽の素材として取り入れました。温暖な気候や、おおらかでゆったりとした人々の気質を音楽で表現するとともに、そうした自然や人々の暮らしを空、そして宇宙から護る航空自衛隊の姿を描いた作品です。

I’m pleased to share the premiere recording of “Guardians Above the Archipelago“, a work I composed in December 2025 on commission to commemorate the 40th Annual Concert of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Southwestern Air Defense Force Band in Okinawa, Japan. The work was premiered in March this year!

My heartfelt thanks to the JASDF Southwestern Air Defense Force Band and its conductor, Toshikatsu Oishi, for bringing this piece to life!

For this commission from the band based at Naha Air Base, I incorporated distinctive scales found in the music of the southwestern islands of Japan. Through the music, I sought to evoke the region’s warm climate and the relaxed, generous spirit of its people, while also portraying the Japan Air Self-Defense Force watching over these natural landscapes and the lives of those who call the islands home, from the skies and beyond.

台湾の社会人吹奏楽団「一夫樂集 房角石管樂團」の委嘱作品として作曲させていただいた「Reveries of the Island」が、10/31(土)に行われる同団の演奏会にて初演されます！

台湾の自然や歴史など、様々なことに思いを馳せた14分ほどの作品です。

指揮は林昀宏老師。
作曲当時、思い描いていた初演の姿があります。今となっては叶わなくなってしまったことに寂しさを感じずにはいられませんが、それでもこうして作品が初演の日を迎えられることを、心よりありがたく思っております。

演奏会では、私の「Thawing(雪解け)」も演奏される予定です。

台湾に行くことを今からとても楽しみにしています！🇹🇼

My new work, commissioned by the Taiwanese amateur wind ensemble “IFF Music Cornerstone Wind Ensemble”, will receive its world premiere at the ensemble’s concert on October 31!

Approximately 14 minutes in length, the work reflects my thoughts on Taiwan’s nature, history, and many other aspects of its rich cultural landscape.

The concert will be conducted by 林昀宏 laoshi.
When I composed this work, I had a particular vision of how its premiere would unfold. There is a sense of sadness in knowing that this vision can no longer be realized, but I am sincerely grateful that the work will nevertheless have the opportunity to come to life in performance.

My work “Thawing” will also be performed at the concert.

I’m already very much looking forward to visiting Taiwan! 🇹🇼

The premiere performance of “When the Lights Awaken“, commissioned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Hokkaido University of Education Hakodate Campus Wind Orchestra, is now available on YouTube!

The piece was premiered by a combined ensemble of more than 150 current members and alumni of the wind orchestra, with myself conducting.

A huge thank you to all the current members and alumni of the Hokkaido University of Education Hakodate Campus Wind Orchestra for this wonderful performance!

At around Grade 1.5 level, this is a four-minute piece designed to be accessible to a wide range of performers.

北海道教育大学函館校吹奏楽団 創立50周年記念委嘱作品「Light Pillars」「黄昏に灯る街明かり(When the Lights Awaken)」が初演された「創立50周年・記念演奏会」の終了後、創立50周年記念祝賀会に出席させていただきました！

1976年創団当時の1期生から現役生まで、総勢約250名の方々が出席され、懐かしい思い出話に花を咲かせたり、世代を超えて交流を深めたりする姿がとても印象的でした。
祝賀会の後は音楽監督の三笠裕也さんと2次会・3次会・4次会と参加させていただき、とても楽しい夜となりました！

北海道教育大学函館校吹奏楽団の創立50周年を、この場をお借りして心よりお祝い申し上げます。
これからも末永く愛される吹奏楽団として活動されることを心から願っております！

北海道教育大学函館校吹奏楽団 創立50周年記念委嘱作品「Light Pillars」が初演された「創立50周年・記念演奏会」では、現役生のステージのみならず現役生✕OBOG合同ステージも設けられ、演奏会のアンコールのために作曲させていただいた
「黄昏に灯る街明かり(When the Lights Awaken)」
という4分ほどの作品を私自身の指揮で初演させていただきました！

現役生のための作品の委嘱打診をいただいた際、「演奏会アンコールでも下田さんの作品を取り上げたいです」とのリクエストをいただいたため「既存曲を演奏するのも良いですが、折角なので新たに作曲しましょう！」ということで生まれた作品です。

函館山から見下ろす、夕暮れから夜へ移り変わる函館の美しい夜景が題材となっており、日没直後の「マジックアワー（黄昏時）」に街へぽつぽつと灯りがともり始め、やがて100万ドルの夜景が目の前いっぱいに広がる幻想的な情景を穏やかな音楽で表現しています。

現役生とOBOG、合わせて150名（！）を超える演奏人数で、現役生とOBOGの響きが溶け合った、とても素敵な演奏となりました。
こちらの初演映像も後日YouTubeに公開予定で、追ってアナウンスさせていただきます！

At the Hokkaido University of Education Hakodate Campus Wind Orchestra’s 50th Anniversary Concert—where my commissioned work Light Pillars received its world premiere—there was also a special combined stage featuring both current members and alumni.

On that stage, I had the joy of conducting the world premiere of my new encore piece, When the Lights Awaken (4 minutes).

When I was first invited to write a piece for the current members, I was also asked if one of my works could be featured as the concert encore. Instead of choosing an existing piece, I decided it would be a wonderful opportunity to create a brand-new work.

The piece is inspired by the breathtaking view from Mount Hakodate as the city transitions from dusk into night. During the magic hour just after sunset, lights gradually begin to appear across the city, until Hakodate’s famous million-dollar night view unfolds before your eyes. I wanted to capture that peaceful and magical moment in music.

With more than 150 performers—current members and alumni together—the sounds of both generations blended beautifully into a truly unforgettable performance.

The premiere video will also be released on YouTube soon, and I’ll share another announcement when it’s available!

8/9(日)は函館サーモン・まるなまホール（函館市民会館）大ホールにて「北海道教育大学函館校吹奏楽団 創立50周年・記念演奏会｣に伺いました！

同団創立50周年を記念する委嘱作品
「Light Pillars」(演奏時間19分)
の全曲版も初演され、若々しさ溢れるエネルギッシュで大変熱い演奏を聴かせていただきました。

吹奏楽団の皆さん、そして委嘱の機会を作ってくださいました同団音楽監督・常任指揮者の三笠裕也さん、本当にありがとうございました！

「Light Pillars」は今から20年前に地元の岩手県で見た「漁火光柱」が作曲の原点となっており、多彩な打楽器と管楽器で私自身の描きたい音世界を思う存分書かせていただきました。
（漁火光柱とは、夜間に海上の漁船が魚を集めるために灯す漁火（集魚灯）が、大気中に漂う微細な氷の結晶（氷晶）によって反射され、光の柱が天へ向かって伸びているように見える自然現象です）

On Sunday, August 9, I had the pleasure of attending the Hokkaido University of Education Hakodate Campus Wind Orchestra’s 50th Anniversary Concert at the Hakodate Civic Hall Main Hall!

The complete version of my commissioned work, Light Pillars (19 minutes), written to commemorate the wind orchestra’s 50th anniversary, was also premiered. They gave an incredibly energetic and passionate performance full of youthful spirit!

My heartfelt thanks to all the members of the wind orchestra, and especially to Yuya Mikasa, the wind orchestra’s Music Director and Principal Conductor, for making this commission possible.

Light Pillars was inspired by an unforgettable sight I witnessed in my hometown of Iwate about 20 years ago: “fishing light pillars,” a natural phenomenon in which lights from fishing boats are reflected by tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, creating the illusion of pillars of light stretching upward into the night sky.

This experience became the starting point for the piece, and I was able to fully explore the sound world I envisioned through a wide variety of percussion and wind instruments.

A video of the premiere will be uploaded to YouTube at a later date, and I’ll share the link when it’s available!
