北海道教育大学函館校吹奏楽団 創立50周年記念委嘱作品「Light Pillars」「黄昏に灯る街明かり(When the Lights Awaken)」が初演された「創立50周年・記念演奏会」の終了後、創立50周年記念祝賀会に出席させていただきました！

1976年創団当時の1期生から現役生まで、総勢約250名の方々が出席され、懐かしい思い出話に花を咲かせたり、世代を超えて交流を深めたりする姿がとても印象的でした。
祝賀会の後は音楽監督の三笠裕也さんと2次会・3次会・4次会と参加させていただき、とても楽しい夜となりました！

北海道教育大学函館校吹奏楽団の創立50周年を、この場をお借りして心よりお祝い申し上げます。
これからも末永く愛される吹奏楽団として活動されることを心から願っております！

北海道教育大学函館校吹奏楽団 創立50周年記念委嘱作品「Light Pillars」が初演された「創立50周年・記念演奏会」では、現役生のステージのみならず現役生✕OBOG合同ステージも設けられ、演奏会のアンコールのために作曲させていただいた
「黄昏に灯る街明かり(When the Lights Awaken)」
という4分ほどの作品を私自身の指揮で初演させていただきました！

現役生のための作品の委嘱打診をいただいた際、「演奏会アンコールでも下田さんの作品を取り上げたいです」とのリクエストをいただいたため「既存曲を演奏するのも良いですが、折角なので新たに作曲しましょう！」ということで生まれた作品です。

函館山から見下ろす、夕暮れから夜へ移り変わる函館の美しい夜景が題材となっており、日没直後の「マジックアワー（黄昏時）」に街へぽつぽつと灯りがともり始め、やがて100万ドルの夜景が目の前いっぱいに広がる幻想的な情景を穏やかな音楽で表現しています。

現役生とOBOG、合わせて150名（！）を超える演奏人数で、現役生とOBOGの響きが溶け合った、とても素敵な演奏となりました。

At the Hokkaido University of Education Hakodate Campus Wind Orchestra’s 50th Anniversary Concert—where my commissioned work Light Pillars received its world premiere—there was also a special combined stage featuring both current members and alumni.

On that stage, I had the joy of conducting the world premiere of my new encore piece, When the Lights Awaken (4 minutes).

When I was first invited to write a piece for the current members, I was also asked if one of my works could be featured as the concert encore. Instead of choosing an existing piece, I decided it would be a wonderful opportunity to create a brand-new work.

The piece is inspired by the breathtaking view from Mount Hakodate as the city transitions from dusk into night. During the magic hour just after sunset, lights gradually begin to appear across the city, until Hakodate’s famous million-dollar night view unfolds before your eyes. I wanted to capture that peaceful and magical moment in music.

With more than 150 performers—current members and alumni together—the sounds of both generations blended beautifully into a truly unforgettable performance.

The premiere video will also be released on YouTube soon, and I’ll share another announcement when it’s available!

同団創立50周年を記念する委嘱作品

の全曲版も初演され、若々しさ溢れるエネルギッシュで大変熱い演奏を聴かせていただきました。

吹奏楽団の皆さん、そして委嘱の機会を作ってくださいました同団音楽監督・常任指揮者の三笠裕也さん、本当にありがとうございました！

「Light Pillars」は今から20年前に地元の岩手県で見た「漁火光柱」が作曲の原点となっており、多彩な打楽器と管楽器で私自身の描きたい音世界を思う存分書かせていただきました。
（漁火光柱とは、夜間に海上の漁船が魚を集めるために灯す漁火（集魚灯）が、大気中に漂う微細な氷の結晶（氷晶）によって反射され、光の柱が天へ向かって伸びているように見える自然現象です）

On Sunday, August 9, I had the pleasure of attending the Hokkaido University of Education Hakodate Campus Wind Orchestra’s 50th Anniversary Concert at the Hakodate Civic Hall Main Hall!

The complete version of my commissioned work, Light Pillars (19 minutes), written to commemorate the wind orchestra’s 50th anniversary, was also premiered. They gave an incredibly energetic and passionate performance full of youthful spirit!

My heartfelt thanks to all the members of the wind orchestra, and especially to Yuya Mikasa, the wind orchestra’s Music Director and Principal Conductor, for making this commission possible.

Light Pillars was inspired by an unforgettable sight I witnessed in my hometown of Iwate about 20 years ago: “fishing light pillars,” a natural phenomenon in which lights from fishing boats are reflected by tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, creating the illusion of pillars of light stretching upward into the night sky.

This experience became the starting point for the piece, and I was able to fully explore the sound world I envisioned through a wide variety of percussion and wind instruments.

A video of the premiere will be uploaded to YouTube at a later date, and I’ll share the link when it’s available!

My new work for large wind ensemble, Light Pillars (duration: 19 minutes), which I composed this June on commission to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Hokkaido University of Education Hakodate Campus Wind Orchestra, will receive its world premiere on Sunday, August 9, at the ensemble’s 50th Anniversary Concert in the Main Hall of Hakodate Salmon Maru-Nama Hall (Hakodate Civic Hall).

The performance will be conducted by the ensemble’s Music Director and Principal Conductor, Yuya Mikasa.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to write this piece completely in my own musical language and to create the sound world I truly wanted to express.

先日はCAFUAレコードの企画「CAFUAセレクション」で、私の吹奏楽作品を航空自衛隊航空中央音楽隊の皆様にレコーディングしていただきました！

今回レコーディングしていただいた私の「夏空の彼方へ」は、『「Wind Works」-9人の管打楽器奏者による極小編成吹奏楽団体-』のために2024年に作曲、初演された作品です。

リリースは今年の10月頃を予定しているそうです。
また追ってアナウンスさせていただきます！

中学の時から幾度となく聴いてきた「CAFUAセレクション」に加わることができて光栄なのはもちろん、尚美の同期である打楽器奏者の森 隼人さんとご一緒できてたのもとても嬉しかったです…！森くん、ありがとう！！

Recently, my wind band work was recorded by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Central Band, one of Japan’s leading wind bands, for the CAFUA Records project, “CAFUA Selection”!

The piece they recorded, Beyond the Summer Sky, was composed in 2024 for Wind Works, a nine-player wind and percussion ensemble, and was premiered by the group that same year.

The recording is scheduled for release around October this year.
I’ll share more details as soon as I have them!

In the summer of 2023, I composed **Future Creators** as a commissioned work celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Wind Orchestra at Ryohoku Junior High School (Conductor and Director: Mr. Jun Hasegawa) in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. The work received its world premiere at the band’s annual concert in October 2023.

I am delighted to announce that **Future Creators** has now been published by **Randall Standridge Music**, a major U.S. sheet music publisher!

I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to compose two large-scale works for wind ensemble, and I’ve spent the past couple of months immersed in writing them. ✍🏻

“Reveries of the Island” (approx. 14 minutes)
A commissioned work for the Taiwanese community wind orchestra IFF Music Cornerstone Wind Ensemble.

“Light Pillars” (approx. 19 minutes)
A commissioned work celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Hokkaido University of Education Hakodate Campus Wind Orchestra.

Both works are scheduled to receive their world premieres later this year, and I’m already looking forward to hearing them come to life.
